Mobile broadband is just another name for 3G (or HSPA, UTMS) coverage. AT&T promised the FCC, DOJ, etc. that they would build out 3G service in all of the buyout areas. If mobile broadband did not allow for mobile coverage then very few people around here would be able to use their phones right now. I have full bars of 3G service at my house and in Pennington Gap. Also, I haven't heard any reports of an ETF unless somebody tried to get out of their account altogether before activating. You can only get out of your account without an ETF within 30 days after your activation. They may even be going by the 30 days from Jan 6th, but I would say it's within your activation date.

I've not been under a contract for about a year so that thought didn't cross my mind.
Wonder how that could work? AT&T already bought Alltel in this area...

It is true, looked at my bill online today out of curiosity and "BAM"! There is the charge. Trying now to get hold of someone before I blow my top.

Odd. The paper today says: "When the phones arrive, they'll have instructions on how to turn them on immediately. There's no need to wait for a specific date."
Let us know what you find out.

Re: AT&T and Alltel Merger
Just got off the phone with AT&T. It apparently is a glich with the computer system and they are working on clearing it up. I waited and watched my 200$ fee drop right off the bill. Mine is now fixed; however, I would suggest everyone call and do the same. It is happening to everyone, not just the oned on contract.

Re: AT&T and Alltel Merger
Got phones activated and working fine, checked bill no extra fee. Now my problem is I wanted to switch to Verizon cause ATT doesn't have any smartphones I really care for but at home last night I had full 3G signal where before I barely had enough to send and receive texts.
Re: AT&T and Alltel Merger
So, Do we go by what the letter said enclosed with the phone or do we just go ahead and start using it?
Re: AT&T and Alltel Merger
Go ahead and have it changed now.
